At this point I'm in a sort of gamer purgatory, having fun in short bursts punctuated suddenly by a nagging boredom. Maybe the second half of the game will pick up the pace a bit. Halfway through, it's too early to bring the hammer down one way or another. Even with the nod to Dark Souls and the higher difficulty level, the game still keeps us too cramped, shaky-cam-running our way down one corridor after another. Even with the new weapons and other changes the game still feels to similar.

Still, I've found it harder to get into this one compared to Gears of War 3. The use of flashbacks, unreliable narrators, the courtroom drama, the fact that it's a prequel-it all changes things up just enough to keep things interesting without really deviating from what we've come to expect with Gears. I mean, this is Gears of War, so we can't expect too much. The story unfolds as testimony before a judge-flashbacks and revelations told from the point of view of several different characters: Damon Baird, Augustus Cole, the rookie Sofia Hendirk and former UIR soldier Garron Paduk. This is woven directly into the narrative as each protagonist relays their recollection of events. These "Declassified Missions" add a lot of flavor to the gameplay and the story.īy choosing to play the Declassified Missions, you're basically accepting an extra level of challenge which allows you to fight grubs with tougher weapons, or blast your way through fog that obscures your vision, or make your way across a bridge using only specific types of weapons not well-suited to the job. You can choose to make any given segment harder (and more rewarding) by "revealing" more about what actually happened. I do like the optional added difficulty setting for each mission. (Digital Foundry has a great analysis of the graphics if you're interested.) It's a much more visually sumptuous game than its predecessor, and one of the best-looking games to date on the Xbox 360. I feel sort of weird even saying that, because Judgment certainly makes better use of color. Gears of War 3 had some really interesting levels-okay, maybe not really interesting levels, but more interesting than what we have in Judgment.
